Applying for housing

If you’re on a low income and in need of housing, you may be eligible to apply for public housing through the Office of Housing.

In most cases there is a waiting period as there are a limited number of homes available.

Homes are located across Victoria and are of varying sizes and types. Because these homes are subsidised by the government, it means rent is less expensive and based on what you can afford.

Whether or not you are approved for public housing depends on your needs and eligibility.

If you have urgent needs, because of issues such as recurring homelessness, a disability that needs support, or other special housing needs, you could get priority housing.  Otherwise, you can apply for general housing.

If your application is approved and placed on the waiting list, you’ll receive up to two offers of housing as suitable properties become available. If you don’t accept either offer, your application may be withdrawn.

You may not be able to choose a specific suburb, however, you can choose up to three broadband areas you would like to live in.  Broadband areas are made up of a number of adjoining suburbs and towns that are linked by public transport and facilities.
