New housing for Bacchus Marsh

Housing Minister Wynne with tenant Mrs Betty Duffin, who will be returning to live in the completed Bacchus Marsh project. Looking on is architect Tim Perks. A $5.4 million housing development is now underway in Bacchus Marsh to provide needed accommodation for elderly citizens in the fast-growing town.

Housing Minister Richard Wynne joined community members and tenants of the original units on the site to inspect plans and ‘turn the first sod’ to commence work for the 23 unit development.

“This project will deliver three, three-storey wings, with a central foyer, lift and a 13-space car park. All of the units will be wheelchair accessible,” Mr Wynne said.

In May 2007 Minister Wynne announced that four existing 2-two storey walk-up blocks built in the 1970s and accommodating 20 older persons flats would be demolished as they were becoming unsuitable for older tenants.

Mr Wynne said he was pleased that tenants of the original units were being given first options on returning to the new development.

“This project has been a real community development, with former tenants and the local neighbourhood invited to have input on the plans and to view detailed drawings of the proposed buildings, giving everyone a real sense of ownership of the new homes,” Mr Wynne said.

The new homes would boast a range of modern, environmentally friendly features that would reduce tenants’ living costs.

Architectural concept of new Bacchus Marsh units“These modern homes will include natural cross ventilation with shading and window glazing to help cooling; energy efficient appliances including solar hot water; insulation; and rainwater tanks for the garden,” he said.

Each of the new 23 flats will have a “flexi-room” that can be converted to a small bedroom, making them ideal for visits from grandchildren or family members, as well as cabling for internet and pay television.

All ground floor units will have private outdoor areas while the upper level units will each have a balcony. A fully landscaped central courtyard will encourage tenants to meet and mix.

The units were designed by Morton Dunn Architects and are to be built by McCorkell Constructions.

“Construction is scheduled for completion in mid 2010 and up to 80 new construction jobs will be created by the project.” Mr Wynne said.
