Announcing a new face for Ashwood Chadstone

Two-year-old Kalyna was unperturbed with all the attention as Office of Housing project director, Nadia Jaworski and Victorian Premier Brumby celebrated the Ashwood Chadstone redevelopment The comprehensive redevelopment of six sites in Ashwood and Chadstone will deliver 170 new affordable homes for those in need and will enhance the area and create a mixed community of families, singles and elderly Victorians living in private and social housing.

Premier John Brumby has announced that not-for-profit Port Phillip Housing Association has been appointed as the successful tenderer for the Ashwood Chadstone Redevelopment project.

Mr Brumby said the project demonstrated the Government’s commitment to providing affordable rental housing in partnership with registered housing associations.

“Our Government is standing up for Victorians feeling the pressure in these tough economic times by investing in new affordable homes and supporting the builders and trades people who will build them,” Mr Brumby said.

“We believe every Victorian deserves access to high-quality, affordable housing. Construction of these 240 new homes, which will also include 70 private homes, will significantly increase the availability of affordable housing stock and have a positive impact on public housing waiting lists in the area.

“All new homes will incorporate sustainable design features to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower living costs for residents with features such as solar hot water units, rainwater collection and storage, natural light and ventilation and 5-star energy efficient appliances.”

The redevelopment will replace 36 run-down and previously demolished units.

As part of this project, Port Phillip Housing Association has successfully bid to build around 250 additional affordable rental homes in other areas of Melbourne. Mr Brumby said the Government will invest $70 million towards the total $140 million in projects which will create over 440 jobs in construction. Port Phillip Housing Association is also contributing $70 million towards the projects.

“This exciting partnership is the largest development by the not-for-profit sector ever in Victoria,” Mr Brumby said.
