Paying for your unit

The occupant of a Movable Unit must agree to pay the weekly or fortnightly hire charge for at least twelve months.

Currently, it costs $90 per week for a one bedroom unit.  If you’re eligible for a rental rebate, it will cost either 25 per cent of your income, or $90 a week, whichever is less.

We will continue to charge you the agreed amount unless you contact your local housing office to apply for a rental rebate.

For private property the applicant (or occupant) is responsible for meeting the costs of upgrading any services if required, prior to the construction of the unit.

For example, if the electricity supply to the main dwelling needs upgrading or an additional septic tank is needed, we will not pay for these works. We will initially pay for the unit to be connected to external services, but if services are upgraded later, we won’t pay for reconnection.

A separate water meter is not provided. We will provide a check meter to help you calculate water usage for the Movable Unit.

Units need to be placed within 10 metres of the main dwelling. If you want to put the unit further than 10 metres away, then either the applicant or occupant will need to pay $252 for each extra metre.

If you own the main dwelling and your property title is affected by a restrictive covenant, it is up to you to arrange for the covenant to be varied, and to pay all associated costs. Your solicitor can advise you how to vary the covenant if required.

Before the unit can be constructed, the site where the unit is to be placed and where services run needs to be cleared of all trees, outbuildings, concrete, brick pavers, debris and other obstructions. If you don’t do this yourself, we’ll charge you for the cost of having the site cleared.

Where LPG gas is requested, we will be responsible for connecting it, but you need to provide the gas bottles and other fittings yourself.

Insurance and maintenance

All rental movable unit insurance are the responsibility of the department the exception being where deliberate damage has been caused to the unit by the occupant/s or the applicatn/s. The occupant needs to take out private insurance to cover the contents of the unit.

Any maintenance work needed on your Movable Units will be done by your local housing office or the Maintenance Call Centre.
