Movable units
If you want to keep living independently while staying in close contact with your family or friends, a Movable Unit might be for you.
These self-contained one bedroom units are set up in the back yard of a friend or relative’s home. Paying for your unit is based on your income.
There is usually a three to six month waiting period after your application is approved for the unit to be constructed on your property.
The unit is designed to have a bedroom, an en-suite bathroom and toilet, and a living room with an annexe kitchen. A stove, heater and hot water service are also provided. Walls and ceilings are insulated, vinyl flooring is fitted in the kitchen and bathroom.
In council planning schemes movable units are also know as Dependant Person's Unit and are defined as a movable building on the same lot as an existing dwelling and are used to provide accommodation for a person who is dependent on a resident of the existing dwelling.
Air conditioning is not provided. If you want air conditioning you must obtain approval from the Department before hand. Installing air conditioning is at the occupant's expense using the services of a qualified tradesperson.
No separate meter is provided for water consumption. Each unit is separately metered for gas and electricity.
All units are existing units, which are transferred from location to location and are refurbished each time they are located.
