General housing
You can apply for public housing if you can't afford a suitable home to rent and you meet the eligibility conditions.
Eligibility
Usually, to be considered for public housing you must:
- not exceed the current general public housing income and asset limits
- not own or part own a house, unit or flat
- live in Victoria
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- repay any money that you still owe from a previous public housing tenancy or bond loan
Application process
To apply for public housing you need to complete the
General Application for Public Housing form (PDF Size 192KB, Pages 12). You can also contact your local housing office if you need help with your application.
If your application is approved, the amount of time you will need to wait for a home will depend on a number of things, such as:
- the date you applied
- the number of applicants that will be considered ahead of you because of their special needs
- the number of properties available in your chosen area
- the rate that these properties become vacant

Updating your details

These forms should be used if you need to provide the Office of Housing with relevant information or authorisation to obtain information, or if you need to make changes to your Public Housing application.

Complete the form of authority to release information to an external agency to enable officers of the Office of Housing to release your information (or some of it) to an external agency.

Emergency contact
Complete the emergency contact form to advise the Office of Housing of your next of kin or legal representative, if there is an emergency.
