General housing

You can apply for public housing if you can't afford a suitable home to rent and you meet the eligibility conditions.

Eligibility

Usually, to be considered for public housing you must:

  • not exceed the current general public housing income and asset limits
  • not own or part own a house, unit or flat
  • live in Victoria
  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • repay any money that you still owe from a previous public housing tenancy or bond loan

Application process

To apply for public housing you need to complete the Adobe PDF Icon General Application for Public Housing form (PDF Size 192KB, Pages 12). You can also contact your local housing office if you need help with your application.

If your application is approved, the amount of time you will need to wait for a home will depend on a number of things, such as:

  • the date you applied
  • the number of applicants that will be considered ahead of you because of their special needs
  • the number of properties available in your chosen area
  • the rate that these properties become vacant
